Help Introduction

This page is designed to help new users of the website become more familiar with how the puzzles and our system works.

When you first surf to our site, you are presented with a typical homepage that consists of our Daily, Weekly, and Monthly puzzle choices, statistical game data such as last attempted puzzle, and latest news about the site.

Viewing Puzzles

To play a puzzle, the user is presented with several different methods. You can browse "Our Picks" list of three different puzzles, daily, weekly, and monthly. Typically the monthly puzzle is a more difficult puzzle where-as the dailies are usually easier.

The next way to view puzzles is via some of the statistical data on the website. We show the hardest puzzles attempted, easiest puzzles attempted, most viewed, and the most recently attempted. This should hopefully narrow down some of the more challenging and fun puzzles for the user.

Lastly, and the most direct method, is to use the "Puzzles" link on the left which will take the user to the puzzle browsing page. They are able to sort the table based on whatever criteria they wish to view and in whatever order they want.

Playing Puzzles

After the user has selected a puzzle to view, they are presented with a web-based chess board with the pieces placed. Above the chess board, there is a description of the puzzle with which side is to move and how many moves are expected until the end result is achieved (typically checkmate). The user needs to click on the appropriate piece they wish to move, and drag it to the spot they want to move to. If the move is correct, you will be presented with a message that says "That's correct" if the move was correct or "Incorrect, try again".

Users are allowed to view a "Hint" on the puzzle by clicking on the "Hint" link directly above the chess board. That will display the next move the system is expecting.

Rating and Commenting on Puzzles

Users are now allowed to rate and comment on puzzles that they play. After loading a puzzle, directly beneath the chess board there is a drop-down box that says "Rate" with a choice of 1 star for poor and 5 stars for excellent.

Also in this area, users can view and post comments about this puzzle. One thing to note however, in order for a user to post their comments, they would need to have an active account and be logged into that account. Anonymous accounts can rate puzzles but you must be verified in order to post comments.

Puzzle Navigation

If you complete a puzzle or wish to move on to a new puzzle, on the right-hand side we have the puzzle navigation links. Your choices are "Random Puzzle", "Random Unplayed", "Next Puzzle", and "Previous Puzzle".

  • Random Puzzle will choose, at random, a puzzle from our database to load.
  • Random Unplayed will show up only for users that are logged into their account. This choice will only load a puzzle that the user has not attempted.
  • Next Puzzle will load the next puzzle in the sequence based on their puzzle id.
  • Previous Puzzle will load the previous puzzle in the sequence based on their puzzle id.
